Completion and Assessment of Final Thesis/Colloquium

Regulations on the completion and assessment of final theses can be found in the Regulation Guidelines for Examinations.
Formal requirements for the final thesis are stipulated by the respective Examination Board of the study programme and can be enquired about there.

The deadline for submission of your final thesis is stipulated at the time of admission to the final thesis procedure and is binding. Should you fall ill while working on your thesis, please inform your Examination Board and submit a medical certificate of your inability to sit for exams right away. Upon acknowledgement of your illness, a new deadline will be sent to you by mail.

Should you unexpectedly not submit your final thesis to the chairperson of the Examination Board by your stipulated deadline, or if your grounds for hindrance from submitting your thesis on time have not been accepted, then the final thesis will be marked with a 5.0 (fail). You have the opportunity to repeat the final thesis procedure only once. You will receive corresponding notification from the Examination Office with a request to submit to the Examination Board a new topic proposal for repetition of the final thesis procedure.
Please use this form: Topic Proposal for Repeat Final Thesis [PDF, 7 KB] (This page is only available in German)

Admission to a repeat final thesis procedure is granted by the Examination Board. You will receive specifications of the subject, examiners and period for completion of the repeat final thesis from the Examination Board or your Department Administration, respectively.

Trial Attempt

If your first attempt at a final examination (final thesis or colloquium) has been made within the standard duration of study and all necessary courses in the main study programme or all required modules have been successfully completed within the same period, then the first attempt at a final thesis or colloquium is not counted as an official attempt if you received a mark of 5.0 (fail). The final thesis or colloquium, respectively, must then be repeated immediately with a different topic.
