What can I study at the HTW?
The HTW offers study programmes in the fields of business, technology, computer science and design. More information can be found in the Study Programme section.

May I attend the preparatory course?
A decision as to whether or not you are eligible to attend the "Studienkolleg" (preparatory course) is not made by the HTW, but rather, by the "Senatsverwaltung für Bildung, Jugend und Sport" (senate office for education, youth and sports).

How many foreigners are offered a place?
Applicants from EU member countries are admitted according to the NC (restricted admission) procedure. You can find more information on NC procedure here: NC (Restricted Admission)
Applicants from non-EU countries are admitted within a 5% quota based on their final mark.

Can I apply for two courses of study?
No, you can only apply for one study programme.

Can I transfer to the HTW?
Applicants to higher subject-related semesters are only admitted if enough places are available in these terms and proof of academic credits can be provided.

How strict is the numerus clausus (NC - restricted admission)?
The NC is not definite prior to the application procedure; it is determined during the admission procedure.
The NC is irrelevant for applicants from non-EU countries, as such candidates are only admitted to study programmes with restricted admission within a 5% quota.

What documents are required for my application?

Can I send in photocopies?
Only notarised copies sent by post will be accepted for the application procedure. You can have photocopies notarised for free at your German health insurance company/fund.
If you submit your application documents in person, you may submit all necessary paperwork as non-notarised copies, but for verification purposes, you must also bring the original documents or notarised copies with you.

Can I hand in documents at a later date?
Documents received after the 15th of January or 15th of July will be disregarded in the current application procedure.
If your documents are still incomplete after this date, we will keep them on file for a maximum of one year. During this time you can submit any documents missing in your application and file your application for the next term. In this case, you don’t have to re-submit any documents, just send in the missing documents and file your application again online at https://onlinebewerbung.htw-berlin.de

Do you offer language prep courses?
The HTW does not offer any language prep courses or DSH prep courses.

How can I sit for the DSH?
Only applicants to the HTW can sit for the DSH (German language university entrance exam for foreign students) at the HTW. To do so, you must file an application and include all necessary documents.

How much is tuition at the HTW?
At the moment, there are no tuition fees in Berlin. However, you do have to pay a semester fee each term, which also covers the costs for a semester ticket for public transport in Berlin.

When will I receive notification of admittance?
For study programmes with non-restricted admission, you will usually receive notification a few weeks after the closing date for applications.
Due to the higher number of applicants to study programmes with restricted admission, this might possibly take longer. In the past, applicants have usually received their letter of notification in the mail one month prior to the start of the term at the very latest.
Please refrain from any enquiries.

If you should experience problems concerning your residence permit, please let us know. We can send you a letter confirming your application, which you can submit to the foreigners authority.
Due to the higher number of applicants to study programmes with restricted admission, this might possibly take longer. In the past, applicants have usually received their letter of notification in the mail one month prior to the start of the term at the very latest.

When will I get my student identity card?
You will receive your student ID after submitting all documents necessary for enrolment and your semester fee has been booked to our bank account. Please refer to your notification of acceptance to find out which documents are needed for enrolment.
Important note: If you are not from an EU member country or Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway and have not been issued a residence permit , you cannot be enrolled at the HTW!

Where can I obtain an International Student Identity Card (ISIC)?
The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) can be applied for at the student union ("AStA") located in the "Studentenmeile" of the main building, room 43/44 at the HTW Berlin campus, Treskowallee 8.

Will I be able to get a part-time job in Berlin to finance my living expenses?
International students are permitted to work 90 full days or 180 half-days per year on a student visa. Please note that you are not allowed to work while attending the "Studienkolleg" (preparatory course).
Part-time jobs usually require solid knowledge of German and are limited.
