The HTW is governed by a team of four members under the chairmanship of the president. All members of the university board have their own individual responsibilities and tasks. Equal opportunity and gender mainstreaming at the HTW is a common task of all members of the university board.

Field of Duty
As chairperson of the HTW's university board, the president holds policy-making powers and domiciliary rights. In addition, the president is responsible for the university's future development. This includes site expansion and improvement, university reforms, the appointment of the teaching board, public relations and the coordination of other decentralised activities, quality management and alumni.

Short Biography
Professor Dr Michael Heine completed studies in economics, business and economics education and political science at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany. After earning his degree, he accepted a post as a research associate and was awarded a doctorate in the field of economics in 1985, also at the FU. He later became involved in the policy-making of the Berlin Senate Office for Business and Technology. In 1994 he joined the FHTW Berlin (by now HTW) as a professor of economics. He has also held various responsibilities in the Academic Self-Administration including his most recent post as the Dean of the Department of Economics I. In October 2006, Professor Dr Michael Heine was appointed the new President of the HTW Berlin.

Field of Duty
The vice-president for research is primarily concerned with research and development, the promotion of young researchers, academic foreign affairs/internationalisation, the transfer of knowledge and technology, including advanced training without an academic degree, collaborative efforts, and third-party projects with partners outside the university community. He also oversees quality management in the areas of applied research and development, as well as transfer of knowledge and technology.

Short Biography
Professor Dr Matthias Knaut began his academic career with studies in prehistory, ancient and early history at the Freie Universität Berlin before later pursing his PhD at the Philipps Universität in Marburg. After years of experience as a research consultant for the Landesdenkmalamt Baden-Württemberg (state landmarks preservation council), Knaut was appointed professor for the restoration of archaeological objects of cultural value at the HTW Berlin. In this position, he played a leading role in establishing the study programme Conservation-Restoration/Field Archaeology. He took over the office of the Dean of the Department of Design in 2003 and has been reappointed four times since. Knaut has served as the Vice President of Research and the HTW Berlin since 1 October 2010.

Field of Duty
The vice-president for teaching is primarily responsible for teaching and learning, advanced training with academic degrees and distance learning, e-learning, auditing, promoting business start-ups and young companies, and quality management in teaching (evaluation and accreditation).

Short Biography
Professor Dr Klaus Semlinger graduated from the Technische Universität Berlin (economics and sociology), and received his doctorate in economics in 1987. After completing his studies, he held positions at several research institutions before joining the FHTW (by now HTW) in 1993 as a professor of economics. His primary scholarly interest lies in the area of network and cooperation research, as well as in small and middle-sized companies. At present he is directing the HTW's Competence Centre "startup - business start-ups and entrepreneurship". Klaus Semlinger began his third term in office as Vice-President for Teaching of the HTW on 1 October 2006.

Field of Duty
The chancellor's responsibilities consist of running the university's Main Administration Office and coordinating the decentralised administration, including managing the university's finances, budget, HR planning and coordinating the appropriation of funds for professors, legal matters, quality management in administration, and the management of corporate investments. The chancellor is also the budget commissioner and the supervisor of non-academic members of staff.

Short Biography
Dr Stephan Becker studied law in Würzburg and worked after his legal clerkship and his Second Examination of State at the Law School of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Würzburg. Later he moved to the Humboldt University Berlin, where he received his doctorate. In 1994 he joined the Senate Department for Science. In the summer of 2008, he became the HTW’s chancellor.
